Fatal Bus Accident on Krapyak Toll Road, DPR Nilai State Neglects to Monitor Safety

JAKARTA - Member of Commission V of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia, Daniel Mutaqien Syafiuddin, highlighted the seriousness of the fatal accident of the PO Cahaya Trans bus on the Krapyak Toll Road, Semarang, Central Java, which killed dozens of passengers on Monday morning, December 22, early morning. He criticized the weak supervision of land transportation safety, especially regarding working hours and driver shifts and the eligibility of the fleet in this incident.

According to Daniel, the tragic accident confirms that the management of public transportation safety, especially inter-provincial inter-provincial (AKAP) buses, still has many gaps that must be immediately corrected systematically.

He assessed that accidents that occurred on toll roads, which should also have high safety standards, were an indicator that risk management, operational compliance, and driver readiness had not been optimally implemented.

"This tragedy cannot be seen as a normal accident. This is a loud alarm for the country to seriously improve public transportation safety," Daniel told reporters, Tuesday, December 23.

Daniel also highlighted the alleged excessive speed as well as the condition of the driver and vehicle, which are still under investigation. He assessed that so far, supervision of drivers' working hours, driver changes, and fleet eligibility has often been administrative in nature.

"If the evaluation only stops at the KIR test and documents, without real supervision in the field, then similar accidents will continue to happen," he said.

Therefore, Daniel asked the Ministry of Transportation together with toll road managers and the police to conduct a thorough evaluation of accident-prone points, especially at toll junctions and toll exit lanes.

He also encouraged the use of safety technology, such as speed limiters based on electronic systems and real-time monitoring of AKAP buses.

"Safety should not depend on the driver's awareness alone, but must be locked by the system," he said.

Daniel said that Commission V of the DPR RI would call on relevant parties to ask for explanations and ensure that corrective steps are taken immediately. He emphasized that transportation safety is a basic right of the community.

"Don't wait for the victims to increase before we make improvements. The state must be present to ensure that every citizen can travel safely," he concluded.
