JAKARTA - Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia Sergey Ryabkov has confirmed that Russia will respond with similar steps if the United States (US) starts testing nuclear weapons again.

"If the United States returns to full and explosive nuclear weapons tests, we reserve the right to do the same," Ryabkov said at the Valdai international discussion forum, reported by ANTARA from Sputnik, Monday, December 22.

He said Russia had so far not received a substantive response from the US regarding the proposal to continue to comply with the restrictions set out in the New START Treaty (New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty) after the agreement expired.

Ryabkov stressed that Russia is ready to ensure its national security by continuing to improve the reliability and effectiveness of its deterrent capabilities, as well as maintaining strategic balance through military-technical countermeasures.

He added that Russia is preparing for all possible developments in the strategic situation after the end of New START, while hoping that the worst scenario can be avoided.

US President Donald Trump in November said his country would conduct a nuclear test because it had "no choice" when other countries did the same.

"We will conduct nuclear tests like other countries. We have more nuclear weapons than any other country and we have to test them," he said.

Responding to Trump's statement, Russian President Vladimir Putin said his country would be forced to take action in response to nuclear tests conducted by other countries.
