JAKARTA - An Air India Boeing 777 aircraft bound for Mumbai was forced to turn back to New Delhi Airport after experiencing engine failure during flight on Monday, December 22.
India's Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said in a statement quoted by Reuters that the plane was facing a drop in oil pressure above the sky which forced the pilot to shut down one of the engines.
The DGCA said the plane returned safely to Delhi after the incident. They added that the modern plane was designed to fly and land safely using one engine in case of emergency.
Air India has been under close scrutiny this year after the airline's Boeing Dreamliner suffered a tragic crash killing 260 people on June 12, 2025.
DGCA has highlighted several safety violations in the airline owned by the Government of India up to 2022.
