JAKARTA - Turkey's domestically produced advanced trainer jet, the Hurjet, is ready to enter mass production, after two prototypes completed around 340 flights and 260 flight hours, according to Turkish defense officials.

Developed by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI), Hurjet is scheduled to be delivered to the Turkish Air Force aerobatics team, Turkish Stars, in 2026, Anadolu quoted (15/12).

Assembly work for the aircraft to be delivered is underway, and the newly produced jet is expected to make its first flight in the first quarter of next year.

TAI CEO Mehmet Demiroglu said the plane was primarily designed as a jet trainer but can be quickly adapted for new missions or delivered in a variant configuration if requested by a customer.

The project began in August 2017 and the aircraft made its maiden flight in April 2023. Before that, the first component that had been completed entered the final assembly line in June 2022, followed by ground tests that included landing gear tests, cable inspections, canopy mechanisms, and a complete test of the avionics, electrical, and fuel systems.

Turkey's first jet-powered supersonic trainer aircraft completed its first engine test on January 30, 2023, before making its maiden flight on April 25, 2023. Testing continues within its design limits.

During the test, two Hurjets performed formation flights with different camouflage, and another one flew with the Turkish Stars aerobatics team, a demonstration that attracted significant attention.

TAI is building a production line capable of building two planes per month. The Turkish Air Force is expected to receive 16 units initially, with the total number to increase as new configurations are added.

It is known that this single-engine jet is designed for training modern fighter aircraft, armed and unarmed air patrols, as well as aerobatics missions. The aircraft has a length of 13.6 meters, a height of 4.1 meters, and a wingspan of 9.5 meters.

The aircraft can reach speeds of up to Mach 1.4 and fly at altitudes of up to 45,000 feet. The Hurjet has seven stations for different loads with a total transport capacity of three tons.
