JAKARTA - Ukraine said it had received 1,000 bodies from Russia. Thousands of bodies, according to Russia, are Ukrainian soldiers who died in battles against his military.

The exchange of prisoners of war and the bodies of dead soldiers is one of the few remaining agreements between Ukraine and Russia since the war began in February 2022.

"Today, the repatriation activities have taken place. 1,003 bodies, which according to the Russians belong to Ukrainian soldiers, have been returned to Ukraine," the Kyiv Coordination Headquarters for the Handling of Prisoners of War said in a statement on social media, Friday, December 19, quoted from AFP.

The leader of the Russian delegation for peace talks with Ukraine, Vladimir Medinsky, confirmed the exchange of bodies by writing on Telegram that the Russian side had also received 26 bodies from Ukraine.

Medinsky said the exchange was possible as part of an agreement reached between Ukrainian and Russian delegations in Istanbul earlier this year.

Tens of thousands of soldiers from both sides have been killed since Russia's invasion, although neither side routinely publishes data on their own casualties.
