JAKARTA - Minister of Home Affairs (Mendagri) Tito Karnavian said that rejected export reject clothes would be sent to disaster sites in Aceh and Sumatra to meet the needs of victims' clothing, Monday (22/12), next week.

"In total, the first phase of 106 thousand (clothes) for Aceh will be handed over on Monday (22/12), then there will be 100 thousand in the second wave for North Sumatra, West Sumatra and Aceh," Tito said at a press conference held at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base, East Jakarta, Friday, December 19, reported by ANTARA.

Tito said the delivery of the clothes had gone through the applicable procedures and with the consent of the Minister of Finance through the Customs hierarchy.

Therefore, the Minister of Home Affairs expressed his appreciation to the Ministry of Finance for having approved the shipment.

"I would like to thank the Minister of Finance, especially the Directorate General of Customs and the Ministry of Trade, for having accelerated the release of clothing from economic areas for the sake of disasters," said Tito.

With this assistance, Tito hopes that the assistance can ease the burden of disaster victims in Sumatra and Aceh.

Previously, Tito proposed that as many as 125 thousand reject clothes were exported from factories in the country to flood victims in several areas in Sumatra.

"We ask for the support of the Minister of Finance and also the Minister of Trade so that these 125 thousand clothes can be sent as soon as possible," said Tito at the Sumatra Disaster Management Cabinet Meeting in Jakarta, Monday (15/12).

He proposed granting special permits for the private sector to channel humanitarian assistance in disaster crisis situations.

Tito said a number of large garment companies in the Special Economic Zone (KEK) were willing to distribute clothing that failed to be exported but was still wearable.

Of the two companies that have coordinated, each has prepared around 100 thousand and 25 thousand pieces of clothing.

President Prabowo Subianto welcomed the proposal and agreed to exempt value-added tax on failed export clothing assistance.

"I think it's good," said Prabowo.

"And yes, please be exempt from VAT, but also be aware (so) it must be handed over to the agency, (in this case) the Ministry of Home Affairs which receives and is responsible. And it must be immediately sent to the disaster area," said the President.
