JAKARTA - Jakarta Deputy Governor Rano Karno believes the Kota Tua area has great potential as a hub for community activity, thanks to its integration with various modes of mass transportation. Rano made this statement while inspecting the Kota Tua area in West Jakarta.
Rano explained that, based on data displayed at the Jakarta Kota Station MRT Gallery, the number of passengers served in the area currently reaches almost 1.3 million people per day. This figure is projected to increase by around 500,000 passengers from the MRT service, excluding TransJakarta users.
"This means that around 2.5 million people will be in and around this area every day. This enormous potential must be properly regulated and managed so that Kota Tua can be enjoyed comfortably by all," Rano said on Wednesday, December 17.
According to him, the Jakarta Provincial Government will undertake comprehensive and sustainable development and revitalization of Kota Tua, in line with the completion of the MRT station construction in the area.
He described today's inspection as part of the regional government's commitment to developing this historic area.
"Today's inspection demonstrates the Jakarta Provincial Government's seriousness in developing Kota Tua. This area has a long history, so it must be handled comprehensively, involving all relevant parties," he said.
Rano explained that the revitalization of Kota Tua is no short-term undertaking. The process has been ongoing for more than a decade, with occasional pauses. Therefore, the area's development cannot be carried out partially or sectorally.
He emphasized the need for cross-agency collaboration and a multidisciplinary approach so that the area's development focuses not only on the physical aspects, but also on the spatial functions and community activities within it.
"This is the starting point. When the MRT station is completed in this area, the development of Kota Tua must proceed simultaneously. We must not let the MRT be operational without the surrounding area being developed. That would be too late," Rano emphasized.
Within the development scheme, the Jakarta Provincial Government is also preparing regulations for residents' economic activities, including the presence of street vendors. Parking areas and business spaces are planned to ensure economic activity continues without disrupting the function of the cultural heritage area.
"Once all of this is realized, it must be well-managed. Otherwise, we will not be able to enjoy this area together," he said.
Rano added that Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has specifically assigned him to lead the revitalization process of Kota Tua. Going forward, the Jakarta Provincial Government will establish a special institution and establish a clear division of roles between relevant agencies.
"We will follow up with the establishment of the institution and clearly define who is responsible for what. We are currently working on this and will continue to develop it as part of our commitment to revitalizing Kota Tua," Rano concluded.
