JAKARTA - The Spanish government has imposed a fine of more than 64 million euros or 75 million US dollars on Airbnb.

Citing AFP, Monday, December 15, the fine was set because the US-based online rental or lodging application displayed advertisements for renting prohibited properties.

In its statement, the Spanish Ministry of Consumer Affairs said 65,122 ads on Airbnb violated consumer rules, including the promotion of properties without a permit or whose permit number does not match the data in the register.

The ministry emphasized that the fine was final. Airbnb was also said to have to correct the violation by removing the illegal content.

The fine is equivalent to six times the illegal profits Airbnb has earned since the company was warned about the prohibited ads.

The tourism boom has boosted Spain's economy but stoked local concerns about housing becoming increasingly scarce and unaffordable in Spain.

The second most visited country in the world recorded a record of 94 million foreign tourists in 2024 and is expected to exceed this figure for this year.
