Malang City Flooded, DPRD Asks For A Total Evaluation Of Handling Before The Intens Of Rainy Season

JAKARTA - Malang City DPRD in East Java emphasized that the Malang City Government must carry out a total evaluation of the flood management pattern that has been carried out so far.

Malang City DPRD Commission C member Arief Wahyudi said that flood events at dozens of points on Thursday, December 4, should be used as lessons by the city government to rearrange the flood management scheme that has been carried out so far, because it has not shown maximum results.

"It's not optimal. Don't let it go, meaning that Malang City cannot be carried out with the usual process of dealing with floods, so it must be evaluated on a large scale for areas mainly hit by floods," said Arief in Malang City, Friday, as quoted by Antara.

Based on data from the Malang City Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), floods on Thursday, December 4 hit 39 points in three sub-districts, namely Blimbing, Sukun, and Lowokwaru.

In fact, floods inundated several main roads in Malang City, such as Jalan Soekarno-Hatta, Ahmad Yani, Jalan Sunandar Priyo Sudarmo, and Jalan Gajayana. Floods also hit several residential areas, such as on Jalan Kedawung, Lt. Gen. S Parman Gang 1, and Jalan Sidomulyo.

Arief stated that the evaluation of the total flood management needs to include efforts to re-register flood-prone points, so that they can get comprehensive handling. Then, it is also possible for the Malang City Government to increase infiltration wells to improve development governance.

He explained that for development governance, it is necessary to have a firm attitude from the executives, especially related agencies in preventing inaccuracy in the affairs of drainage development.

The evaluation stage, he said, could involve sub-districts and sub-districts as parties in direct contact with community problems at the regional level.

Arief requested that this evaluation be carried out as soon as possible, considering that the rainy season is predicted to continue to occur from December to February 2025.

"In my opinion, the flood emergency was not only yesterday, but when and before it was the same. The only point changed and this made me surprised," he said.

Evaluation, he said, was the first step while waiting for the process of using aid funds from the World Bank which had been focused on flood management.

However, he continued, the placement of the project at the flood management point from the results of the World Bank assistance was still relatively lacking if the problem was to be completely resolved.

"The mayor declared that he was free to flood in 2026, but I am not sure. Because only at Lt. Gen. Sutoyo and Jalan Bondowoso, flooding in Malang City will still exist," he said.

Therefore, Commission C plans to summon the city government to conduct discussions regarding flood management.
