Thousands Of Schools Affected By Aceh-Sumatra Floods, Commission X Of The House Of Representatives Asks Teachers And Students To Be Prioritized

JAKARTA - Member of Commission X DPR RI, Habib Syarief Muhammad highlighted 1,009 schools affected by flooding in Aceh and parts of Sumatra, especially North Sumatra and West Sumatra. He urged the government to prioritize the condition of teachers and students before moving on to mapping education infrastructure.

According to Habib Syarief, comprehensive mapping is important to ensure that the recovery process takes place quickly, precisely, and in favor of students. He also emphasized that the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (Kemendikdasmen) must strengthen coordination with local governments in dealing with this emergency situation.

"The condition of teachers and students must be mapped first. We must ensure they are safe and get the necessary support. After that, then we will focus on the condition of the school building," Habib Syarief told reporters, Monday, December 1.

The member of the education commission said that many schools may experience minor to severe damage. So according to Syarief, cleaning and repairs must be done immediately to prevent long-term impacts on the learning process.

In addition, he also asked the government to set up an emergency tent as a temporary study room so that teaching and learning activities do not stop for too long.

"Children still have to get their education rights. If the school space cannot be used yet, emergency tents must be established as soon as possible," said the PKB legislator from the West Java I electoral district.

Habib Syarief emphasized that Commission X DPR RI will continue to oversee the process of handling floods and landslides, especially related to educational facilities.

"We encourage the acceleration of educational recovery measures in affected areas," he said.

Previously, the Minister of Education and Culture Abdul Mu'ti emphasized that he would continue to try to mitigate and map it to ensure that learning and learning activities for students in flood-affected areas could continue.

According to Mu'ti, the number of disaster-affected education units in Aceh Province is 310, North Sumatra Province is 385, and West Sumatra Province 314 with a total of 1,009.
