After Sentenced To Death, Former Bangladeshi PM Sentenced To 21 Years In Prison Related To Corruption

JAKARTA - Bangladeshi court sentenced his former Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina to 21 years in prison for a corruption case on Thursday 27 November.

In a case of bloody violence against student demonstrations that toppled her power last year, Hasina on Monday 17 November was also sentenced to death.

Citing AFP, Hasina is currently in India on her escape using a helicopter on August 5, 2024, after her self-critical government for weeks was demoked by students and many elements of society led to the overthrow of power.

He also opposed the court's order to return to Bangladesh to undergo trial until he was finally sentenced to two different cases.

The 78-year-old woman is still facing three other cases that have been filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (KPK) over land grabbing on beneficial lands on the outskirts of the capital Dhaka.

Hasina's behavior "shows a constant corrupt mindset rooted in a sense of right, uncontrollable power, and greed for public property," said judge Abdullah Al Mamun.

"By treating public land as a personal asset, he directs his greed at state resources and manipulates official procedures to benefit himself and his close relatives," he continued.

Hasina's son, Sajeeb Wazed, lives in the US with his daughter, Saima Wazed, who has served as a top UN official. Both were sentenced to five years in prison, respectively.
