Febri Diansyah: The KPK Is Far Different Now

JAKARTA - Legal practitioner, Febri Diansyah, assessed that the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has undergone drastic changes since 2019. According to him, there has been a weakening of the power of eradicating corruption and a decrease in the level of public trust in the anti-corruption agency.

"So civil society, academics or various parties see that the KPK is now different from before 2019. Even though I still believe in friends who work at the KPK, even though I don't know everyone, I still have the intention, have the desire to eradicate corruption seriously," said Febri while talking to Eddy Wijaya on the EdShareOn podcast which aired on Wednesday, November 26, 2025.

According to Febri, the weakening of the KPK and the low public trust were caused by various factors. For example, the revision of Law Number 19 of 2019 and ethical violations committed by the KPK leadership. Is it possible (to eradicate corruption) with the current system? That's the challenge. For example, in the revision of the KPK law, investigators and investigators of ASN and their institutions under the president, executive power. Can it be independent? That's the most basic question," he said.

The KPK has recently been in the spotlight because of a number of cases involving KPK officials. For example, the Chairperson of the KPK for the 2019-2023 period, Firli Bahuri, who was caught in the extortion case and the Deputy Chairperson of the KPK for the 2019-2024 period, Nurul Ghufron, was caught in an ethical case related to his abuse of influence. According to the Indonesian Political Indicators Survey, the level of public trust in the KPK was 70 percent in 2025, falling free compared to 2018 reaching 84.8 percent.

Febri said that in the past the KPK often held the highest position as an institution that was trusted by the public to compete with the TNI. However, now the conditions are much different because they are often ranked below. Sometimes the KPK number 1, sometimes also overtaken by the TNI," said the former KPK spokesman for the 2016-2020 period.

Even so, Febri believes that the KPK is unable to be the only institution that handles corruption cases. Legal practitioner Febri Diansyah does not believe there are allegations of corruption regarding land acquisition for the Jakarta Bandung High Speed Train (KCJB). He assessed that the truth of the case could not be concluded because it was still under investigation at the KPK, not yet to the investigation stage.

"I'm not sure (the Whoosh case) is true, why? Because the KPK has not conducted an investigation. (But) the investigation has, what does it mean? It must be assumed that the KPK is currently investigating information. Is there a crime or not? It has not been concluded by the KPK," Febri told Eddy Wijaya.

The anti-corruption activist who was born in Padang, West Sumatra, February 8, 1983, explained that the KPK must look at the case from several points of view, namely business with crime. If there is a loss infeasibility, this loss must really be included as an impact of unlawful acts in the criminal realm, or this loss is the impact of business risks?' said Febri.

Regarding the sale and purchase of land, Febri added, the serious problem faced by Indonesia at this time is the recording of land that is still in disarray.
