Semeru Status Rises To Alert Level, Lumajang Ampelgading Line Is Completely Closed

Following the increase in volcanic activity of Mount Semeru, the Malang Resort Police (Polres), East Java, took emergency steps by closing the total access road of the connecting province between Ampelgading, Malang Regency, and Lumajang Regency, East Java.

This closure was carried out after the status of Mount Semeru was officially raised from Level III (Alert) to Level IV (Awas) at 17.00 WIB, Wednesday 19 November.

The Head of Public Relations of the Malang Police, AKP Bambang Subinajar, said that the closure of this access was a crucial anticipatory step for the safety of residents. The Lumajang Ampelgading Line is considered unsafe because it is close to the area affected by the eruption of Mount Semeru's volcanic material.

"We have fully closed the route from Ampelgading to Lumajang for the time being. We will direct all road users to Lumajang via the Malang 'Probolinggo Order' alternative route," said AKP Bambang, Wednesday night.

According to Bambang, the decision to close this will take effect until conditions are declared safe again by the authorities. Personnel from the Traffic Unit and operational functions of the Malang Police have been alerted at strategic points to carry out insulation and provide accurate information to motorists.

"This is purely for the safety of the community. The volcanic situation is still fluctuating, so the direct route to Lumajang is not safe to pass. We ask the public to understand and follow the directions of the officers," he added.

To anticipate a wider impact, the Malang Police have not only closed the provincial route, but have also alerted two platoons of police officers in the Ampelgading area. This member is ready to be moved at any time to vulnerable areas, especially in Ampelgading which is directly adjacent to Lumajang.

AKP Bambang appealed to residents in the southern region, especially Ampelgading and the area around the river to head up in Semeru, to remain vigilant and follow the directions of the officers.

"The safety of residents is a top priority. We are also coordinating closely with the Lumajang Police, BPBD, SAR, and all relevant stakeholders. If the situation turns into an emergency, the evacuation process will be carried out immediately together," concluded AKP Bambang Subinajar.

The increase in activity of Mount Semeru occurred after a series of hot clouds and lava avalanches since noon Wednesday (19/11/2025). The eruption was recorded starting at 14:13 WIB with a maximum amplitude of 25 mm and a sliding distance of 5 kilometers.

This activity was followed by an increase in amplitudes of up to 38 mm at 15.37 WIB, with a sliding distance of 5.5 kilometers. This increase in activity prompted the determination of the Semeru Status to Level IV (Awas).
