JAKARTA - The United States launched its latest military offensive against ships suspected of transporting drugs off the coast of Latin America.

US President Donald Trump is currently increasing pressure on Venezuela with a massive increase in military power in the region.

The US military attacked a ship believed to be transporting drugs in the eastern Pacific on Saturday, killing three people on board, the Pentagon said on Sunday.

"The intelligence confirms that the ship was involved in smuggling illegal narcotics, crossing known narcotics trade routes, and carrying narcotics," the US Southern Command said in a statement.

The announcement of the attack comes hours after Washington's largest and most advanced aircraft carrier, USS Gerald R. Ford, arrived in the Caribbean Sea.

The deployment of the aircraft carrier raises fears the Trump administration may be preparing for an imminent military action against Venezuela.

Although the Trump administration views military action in the region as an attempt to counter illegal drug flows, Caracas sees the move as a pretext for overthrowing Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro from power.

Trump, who last week said he "almost" made a decision about a possible military action against Venezuela, on Sunday hinting that his government could hold negotiations with Maduro.

"We'll see the results later. But they want to negotiate," Trump told reporters.

Earlier on Sunday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced Washington would designate Cartel de los Soles, a criminal organization Trump's administration led by Maduro, as a foreign terrorist organization' (FTO).
