BANDUNG - The West Java Provincial Government (Pemprov) will issue a Circular (SE) prohibiting teachers from imposing physical punishment on students in all provinces.
West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi said that the application of physical punishment to students risks violating the law as stipulated in the law.
"Today I issued a circular to all teachers in West Java so that punishment for naughty children is sufficient with educational matters, they cannot be physically punished for risking violating the legal aspect," said Dedi Mulyadi in Bandung, Antara, Friday, November 7.
He added that the form of punishment can be transferred to educational activities and build character, such as cleaning gardens or toilets, painting walls, cleaning glass, or helping other school assignments.
The circular was issued following a dispute between the parents of a student and a teacher in Subang, which occurred as a result of a slap to the student.
Dedi also said that the West Java Provincial Government had prepared around 200 lawyers to assist high school and vocational teachers if they faced legal problems in carrying out their duties.
"In addition, in West Java there are already about two hundred lawyers who are ready to assist high school and vocational teachers if they face legal problems," he said.

Furthermore, the West Java Provincial Government requires parents to sign a statement of support for the application of discipline in schools.
The government will also return students to their parents if they refuse to follow the applicable rules and sanctions.
This step, said Dedi, aims to establish a more responsible and character educational mindset within the West Java school environment.
