JAKARTA - Afghanistan and Pakistan will continue peace negotiations in Istanbul on Thursday, after the previous round ended without a permanent ceasefire agreement.
The military from the two neighboring South Asian countries clashed last month, killing dozens of people in the worst violence since the Taliban returned to power in Kabul in 2021.
The two sides signed a ceasefire in Doha on October 19. But the second round of negotiations in Istanbul last week ended without a long-term deal, due to disagreements over the hostile militant group Pakistan operating in Afghanistan.
"We hope that the wisdom of winning and peace will be restored in this region," Pakistan Defense Minister Khawaja Asif told reporters, Wednesday, November 5.
He said Islamabad was pursuing a "single agenda" to convince Afghanistan to control the militants attacking Pakistani forces across the border with them, which the Taliban allegedly knew.
Two government sources said the head of Pakistan's military intelligence wing, Asim Malik, led the Pakistani delegation.
Afghanistan's delegation will be led by intelligence chief Abdul Haq Wasiq, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told state broadcaster RTA.
Pakistan and the Taliban have been in a warm relationship for decades, but the relationship has deteriorated sharply in recent years.

Islamabad accused the Taliban of hiding the Pakistani Taliban, a separate militant group that had repeatedly clashed with the Pakistani military.
Kabul denies it, saying it has no control over the group.
October clashes began after Pakistani airstrikes early in the month in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, among other locations, targeting Pakistani Taliban leaders.
The Afghan Taliban government responded with attacks on Pakistani military posts along the 2,600 km (1,600 miles) border, which is still closed for trade.
Clashes continued during the ceasefire period, with many deaths reported on both sides.
