PONTIANAK - The West Kalimantan Customs and Excise Regional Office (Kalbagbar) handed over a suspect with the initials M along with evidence in the form of illegal cigarettes to the Pontianak District Attorney (Kejari).
"This handover is a follow-up to the case of the circulation of cigarettes without excise stamps which was carried out on September 11 in the West Pontianak area, Pontianak City," said Head of Customs and Excise Facilities at the West Kalimantan Customs and Excise Regional Office, Beni Novri, in Pontianak, Antara, Thursday, November 6.
During the action, officers secured 594,784 cigarettes without excise stamps with a potential state loss of Rp575.9 million. Based on the results of the investigation, the case file was declared complete (P-21) by the West Kalimantan High Prosecutor's Office on November 4.
"M is suspected of violating Article 54 in conjunction with Article 56 of Law Number 11 of 1995 concerning Excise as amended by Law Number 7 of 2021 concerning Harmonization of Tax Regulations, namely selling excisable goods that are not attached to excise stamps," he said.
According to Beni, the mode used by the suspect was to send illegal cigarettes through an expedition service. After receiving reports from the public, officers conducted a search until they managed to arrest the suspect along with evidence at his home.
He emphasized that the circulation of illegal cigarettes in West Kalimantan is still rampant and is a serious concern for law enforcement officials. Therefore, Customs and Excise continues to strengthen coordination with relevant agencies and local governments to suppress the circulation of illegal excisable goods.
"We emphasize the importance of synergy between agencies in eradicating the circulation of illegal cigarettes. We also urge the public to obey the law and actively report if they find indications of excise violations," said Beni.
He added that the eradication of illegal cigarettes is part of an effort to protect the public while maintaining the stability of state revenues from the excise sector.
