JAKARTA - A total of 20 children living in RT 18 East Cakung, East Jakarta, experienced illness which was allegedly caused by air pollution from the Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF) Plant Rorotan operational trial.

"That's right, there are 20 of my residents who have experienced various air-related diseases. That's just from my RT, not including other areas," said Head of RT 18 Cakung Timur, Wahyu Andre Maryono in Jakarta, Antara, Monday, November 3.

According to Wahyu, this case began to emerge throughout October after the RDF Plant Rorotan trial.

He noted that dozens of children had various health problems, ranging from eye pain, coughing colds, vomiting, to acute respiratory tract infections (ARI).

"There are five children who are still sick to this day," he said.

Most residents, Wahyu continued, carried out independent treatment, while others were treated at health facilities. He hopes that the government will follow up on the report seriously.

"We ask that this be a serious concern because residents have felt the impact firsthand," he said.

Previously, a number of residents from housing in East Jakarta also asked the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government to temporarily suspend the operation of the RDF Plant Rorotan which is considered not to meet standard operating procedures (SOP).

"We urge the RDF Plant Rorotan to be closed or stop operating in order to maintain the health, comfort, and quality of the people's environment," said Wahyu.

He added, based on findings in the field, there are still many violations of SOPs committed by RDF Plant managers. Among other things, warehouse or factory doors are not closed tightly during the loading and unloading process, so the smell and dust spread to the surrounding environment.

In addition, garbage transportation is also considered not in accordance with the provisions because it is still using vehicles that are not tightly closed, so it has the potential to cause a lide spill on the road.

“Operasional fasilitas ini masih menimbulkan dampak negatif bagi kesehatan dan kenyamanan warga,” ujar Wahyu.

"The operation of this facility still has a negative impact on the health and comfort of the residents," said Wahyu.
