Mount MarapiACKs Ash Again To The Sky Of West Sumatra

The Gunung Marapi Volcano Post (PGA) reported that the eruption occurred on Monday morning at around 10.57 WIB with a duration of about 29 seconds.

The volcano in Agam Regency and Tanah Datar Regency, West Sumatra, emitted a column of ash about 300 meters above the peak.

"There was an eruption of Mount Marapi in West Sumatra on November 3 at 10.57 WIB with a column height of ash being observed about 300 meters above the peak," said PGA officer Teguh Purnomo, in Padang, Antara, Monday, November 3.

From the local PGA report, the column of ash was white to gray with thick intensity leaning towards the southeast. The eruption was recorded on a seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 22.5 millimeters and a duration of about 29 seconds.

Currently, Mount Marapi is still on Alert status or Level II. The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) issued a number of recommendations, including prohibiting people, tourists, and visitors from carrying out activities within a three-kilometer radius of the main crater, namely the Verbeek Crater.

PVMBG also warns of the potential danger of cold lava, especially for people living along rivers that originate from the top of the volcano. This threat increases during the rainy season.

In addition, the public is advised to use a mask covering the nose and mouth in the event of ash rain to prevent respiratory tract problems. PGA together with PVMBG also reminded that there is a pile of eruptive material on the slopes of the mountain which can trigger cold lava flows at any time.

Kondisi tersebut perlu diwaspadai karena berpotensi menimbulkan banjir lahar seperti yang pernah terjadi pada 11 Mei 2024, yang saat itu menelan puluhan korban jiwa.

This condition needs to be watched out for because it has the potential to cause lava flooding as happened on May 11, 2024, which at that time claimed dozens of lives.
