Generation Z And Alpha In The Maldives Will Never Be Able To Smoke For Life!

JAKARTA - The Government of Maldives has officially imposed a ban on tobacco for the 2007-born generation which is included in Generation Z and generations born after 2007, namely generation alpha and beta.

According to the Ministry of Health of the Maldives, this step was taken by the government as one of the state's efforts to protect its public health and create a young generation of successors who are tobacco-free.

"This generation of tobacco ban reflects the government's strong commitment to protecting the younger generation from tobacco hazards and is in line with the Maldives' obligation based on the World Health Organization (WHO) Framework Convention on Tobacco Control," the Ministry of Health said in a statement. quoted from Antara, Saturday 1 November.

The law, which was passed by President Mohamed Muizzu in May 2025, marks the Maldives as the first country in the world to impose a national tobacco ban on a generation.

The law stipulates that people born on or after January 1, 2007, are prohibited from buying, using, or buying tobacco products in the Maldives. This prohibition includes all types of tobacco, and retailers are required to check the age of buyers before selling tobacco products.
