Honorary Symbols Sacred: Calls For Indigenous Papuan Leaders Protect The Cenderawasih Crown

Papuan traditional leaders have asked the government to immediately make special rules to protect the Cenderawasih bird crown, following the burning of the traditional crown which sparked a strong reaction from the local community.

The act of burning the Cenderawasih crown has hurt the feelings of indigenous peoples and injured cultural symbols that have sacred values.

"Therefore, we hope that the Papuan Provincial Government, the Papuan People's Assembly (MRP), and the Papuan House of Representatives will immediately draw up regulations governing the protection of traditional symbols," said Indigenous Leader Ondofolo Yoka Ismael Mebri in Jayapura, Antara, Wednesday, October 29.

According to him, with the regulation, similar incidents will not happen again.

"The city of Cenderawasih is not just a decoration, but a symbol of the honor and dignity of indigenous peoples that should not be used carelessly. Therefore, the rules of use must also be clear," he said.

Papua Governor Matthew Fakhiri expressed his full support for the plan to draft Papuan cultural values protection rules.

"This is so that it doesn't happen again. We will make a special regulation governing the values of Papuan culture, after traditional leaders submit points that will be outlined in provincial regulations or special regional regulations," said Fakhiri.

The drafting of the regulation requires the involvement of all parties, including traditional leaders and community institutions.

“Jika poin-poin itu sudah diserahkan, saya akan mengundang Biro Hukum untuk mempelajarinya agar segera dibuatkan peraturan gubernur,” ujarnya.
