JAKARTA - The European Union's Head of Foreign Policy, Kaja Kallas, called Russia's President Vladimir Putin's plans to visit Hungary, a member of the European Union, to discuss Ukraine, as "unpleasant".
US President Donald Trump said on Thursday last week he would soon meet Putin in Budapest.
Kallas told reporters ahead of a meeting of European foreign ministers in Luxembourg that Trump's efforts to bring peace were welcome, but it was also important for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to meet with Russian leaders.
"America has great power to pressure Russia to come to the negotiating table. If they take advantage of it, of course it would be good if Russia stopped this war," Kallas said.
Putin faces an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC), which is in the process of being released from Hungary.
"Regarding Budapest, no, it is not fun to see someone who is actually included in an arrest warrant by the ICC coming to a European country," Kallas said, questioning the certainty of the positive results of Putin-Trump's planned meeting.
Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kestutitis Budrys said Putin had no place in any European capital.
"The only place for Putin in Europe is in The Hague, before a court, not in any capital," he said ahead of the ministerial meeting.
Kallas also told reporters he expected the 19th sanctions package against Russia to be adopted this week, but said the approval would only be made on Monday.
