The plan to deploy international troops in the Gaza Strip to stabilize security in the Palestinian enclave has begun, two senior US advisers said on Wednesday.
One of the main requirements of President Donald Trump's 20-point plan for Gaza is the formation of a US-backed stabilization force. Washington has agreed to provide up to 200 troops to support the force without having to be stationed in Gaza itself.
The two senior advisers, in a briefing to reporters, said tensions were still high between Israeli forces and Hamas militants in the region.
"Currently, all we want to achieve is the basic stabilization of the situation. International stabilization forces are starting to be built," one of the advisers said.
Among the countries interviewed by the US to contribute to the force are Indonesia, United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Qatar, and Azerbaijan, the adviser said, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Advisers say there are up to two dozen US troops in the region to help prepare for operations, carrying out the role of "coordination and supervision".
"The goal is to take advantage of all local partners who want to help and engage," the adviser said.
After Hamas killed seven people in Gaza City he accused of working with Israel, advisers said there were discussions to build a safe zone for civilians to prevent similar incidents.
Another adviser said no Gazans would be forced to leave the torn Palestinian enclave. Officials are considering rebuilding areas free of Hamas militants.

It is known, President Trump said he wanted to see the enclave being rebuilt and had promised investment from various international partners, but this effort would take time.
The advisers also said patience was needed to find the dead Israeli hostages, saying the process would take longer than expected because their bodies were buried under the rubble and unexploded weapons.
They said there was a discussion about giving gifts for information that led to the discovery of bodies.
