Strong Wind Hits Jember, 2 People Die

JEMBER - The Jember Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) reported that two victims died during a strong wind disaster accompanied by heavy rains that hit a number of areas in Jember Regency, East Java.

"Two victims who died were Siaman (64) and his son Saiful Rohman (29), a resident of Jalan Jawa VII, Sumbersari Village, Sumbersari District," said Head of Emergency and Logistics Division of BPBD Jember Z. Wahyudi Hidayat as reported by ANTARA, Monday, October 13.

Heavy rain accompanied by hail and strong winds hit a number of sub-districts in Jember Regency, so that many trees fell on vehicles, houses, and livestock cages that caused two people to die at the scene.

"The two victims at the time of the incident were in their cattle pens, but due to heavy rain and strong winds caused the bamboo tree to collapse on the livestock cage," he said.

After receiving the report, BPBD officers, Polri, TNI, Tagana, volunteers and the surrounding community immediately evacuated the two victims from the rubble of their livestock sheds.

In Sumbersari District, there are several fallen tree points including Jalan Letjen Panjaitan, Lt. Gen. S. Parman, and in the Jember University (Unej) campus area.

Not only in Sumbersari District, several volunteers reported fallen trees falling on houses and blocking road access such as in Kaliwates, Patrang, and Ajung sub-districts.

"We are still conducting assessments and data collection in a number of locations affected by strong winds that are scattered at several points in Jember," he said.

Sementara Kapolsek Sumbersari Kompol Suhartanto mengatakan hujan deras yang disertai angin kencang menyebabkan banyak pohon terjadi rumah, kendaraan dan menutup akses jalan.

"The victims who died have been successfully evacuated and handed over to their families for immediate burial. We urge the public to remain careful and alert to extreme weather," he said.
