Ghana's Overturned Ship Kills 15 Passengers, Most Child Victims

JAKARTA - A ship capsized in a lake in northeastern Ghana killing 15 people, most of whom were children.

Citing AP, Monday, October 13, Ghana's maritime authorities reported last Sunday that the accident occurred in Lake Volta in West Krachi District, Oti Region.

"Tragisnya, 11 korban tewas adalah anak-anak berusia antara dua dan 14 tahun (lima laki-laki dan enam perempuan)," bunyi pernyataan otoritas maritim Ghana.

The accident occurred when a ship carrying 64-year-old children and parents was traveling from Okuma to Bovide.

Ghana's maritime authorities said four adults survived the accident.

According to the authority, the accident occurred as a result of a violation of safety standards and was "unacceptable." Preliminary findings suggest that the ship was overloaded,

A special investigation team, including naval personnel, has been deployed to the scene to find out the cause of the accident.
