SEMARANG - The Governor of Central Java, Ahmad Luthfi, revealed that mental health problems are one of the most common diseases detected through the Mobile Specialist Program (Speling) which is integrated with Free Health Checks (CKG) in various village areas in Central Java.

"I observed that quite a number of cases of mental disorders were found. Therefore, we involved a specialist in the Specing program," said Governor Luthfi in Semarang, Saturday, October 11.

Thousands Indicated For Depression And Anxiety

Based on data from the Central Java Provincial Health Office as of October 10, 2025, 5,918,363 people have participated in mental health screening through the Speling, CKG, and other health activities programs, including examinations at schools.

Of these:

32,735 people (0.55%) indicated experiencing symptoms of depression

28,846 people (0.49%) showed symptoms of anxiety

The governor emphasized that the Specing program is designed to bring specialist service access closer, especially in rural areas where there was previously minimal access to specialist doctors.

"In villages, many people have never met specialist doctors. This program is a manifestation of the state's presence in ensuring comprehensive health services to the village level," he said.

As of September 2025, the Speling program has reached 560 villages in Central Java, and continues to expand with support from the CKG national program.

Elderly Who Live Alone Are The Most Vulnerable

Mental specialist from RSJD RM Soedjarwadi Klaten, Dr. Dwi Rejeki Nursanti, who took part in the Speling service, said that the elderly who live alone are the most vulnerable groups to mental disorders such as mild depression and anxiety.

On average, of the 10 patients we treated, seven of them came with complaints of anxiety and depression. Most of them are parents who live alone because their children are wandering, "he said.

Of the patients examined, their age ranged from 50 to 65, and only one patient was 40 years old. Some patients admitted that they felt lonely and missed their family, which triggered symptoms of mild depression.

Solutions: Social Activity and Environmental Support

According to Dwi, involvement in social and community activities such as recitation, PKK social gathering, or the elderly posyandu can help reduce feelings of loneliness and mental stress felt by the elderly.

In addition to the Specing program, RSJD RM Soedjarwadi also has an initiative called Sapu Jagad, which is a reporting service if there are people in the community with mental disorders. The hospital will carry out pick-up, treatment, therapy, and skills training before the patient is returned to the community.

"We are not only treating them, but also helping them recover and return to power in the social environment," concluded Dwi.
