The public prosecutor of the Medan District Prosecutor's Office, North Sumatra, has demanded the death penalty for two defendants who were couriers of 10.9 kilograms of methamphetamine.
"Ask the panel of judges to sentence the two defendants to the death penalty," said Public Prosecutor Septian Napitupulu at the trial reading the demands at the Medan District Court, Wednesday, October 8.
Septian said the actions of the two defendants were deemed proven to be couriers of 10.9 kilograms of methamphetamine from Aceh to Jakarta, as in the primary indictment, namely Article 114 paragraph (2) in conjunction with Article 132 paragraph (1) of Law Number 35 of 2009 concerning Narcotics.
He said the aggravating thing was the actions of the two defendants because they did not support the government's program in eradicating criminal acts of drug abuse.
Meanwhile, the mitigating factors were for the defendant Imran (26) who was a resident of North Aceh Regency, Aceh Province, and Tarmizi alias Midi (51), a resident of Tangerang City, Banten Province, who was not found.
After listening to the reading of the indictment, Chief Judge Sulhanuddin gave the two defendants the opportunity to submit a memorandum of defense or plea at the follow-up hearing next week.
"The trial was postponed and continued on Wednesday (22/10), with a pledoi agenda of the two defendants and their legal advisors," said Sulhanuddin.
Previously, the Public Prosecutor's team from the Medan Kejari, Sofyan Agung Maulana and Tommy Eko Pradityo, in the indictment revealed that the narcotics abuse case began on Monday (3/2), when the defendant Imran received a call from the defendant Tarmizi who invited him to Jakarta to deliver methamphetamine from Aceh.
Defendant Imran agreed to the invitation and was picked up the next day in North Aceh using a black car numbered B 1237 KJO.
"During the trip, the defendant Imran knew that the car contained items in the form of methamphetamine," said Sofyan.
On Tuesday (4/2), at around 13.00 WIB, the defendant Tarmizi received a call from Ridhwan (DPO) through the Zangiyang application asking about their position. Both answered that they were already on the Tanjung Pura Toll Road to Medan.
However, based on public information, officers from the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) have carried out surveillance of the vehicle.
The BNN team then stopped the car at the Tebing Tinggi Residential Area 118, Kisaran, Batu Bara Regency, on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, at around 15.00 WIB.
Furthermore, the two defendants were arrested and BNN officers found 11 packs of methamphetamine weighing 10,964 grams which were hidden in the car fuel tank.
"The two defendants admitted that the methamphetamine was brought from Aceh to be handed over to someone in Jakarta according to Ridhwan's order, who is still at large," said Sofyan.
