Task Force Continues Mapping Areas Exposed To Cesium-137 Radiation In Cikande

The Ministry of Environment (KLH) has tightened supervision in the Cikande Modern Industrial Estate, Serang Regency, Banten, after the discovery of the alleged Cesium-137 radioactive substance contamination.

The detailed mapping of the affected areas is currently being carried out to ensure the condition and level of radiation exposure in the area.

Deputy for Control of Pollution and Environmental Damage KLH as well as Head of Division I Mitigation and Handling of Radiation Sources, Ratio Ridho Sani, said his party together with the cross-institutional team continued to take intensive mitigation steps.

"The progress continues in the process of decontamination, starting from controlling the movement of vehicles entering the Cikande Modern Industrial Estate," said Rasio when contacted in Jakarta, Antara, Monday, October 6.

He explained that the detailed mapping was carried out with the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) and the Nuclear Energy Supervisory Agency (Bapeten) who are members of the Task Force (Satgas) for Handling Hazard Insecurity for Radionuclide Radiation Cesium-137 and Affected Public Health.

"Mapping of radiation exposure areas or contamination is carried out in more detail to ensure the points affected," he said.

The KLH has also implemented a Radiation Portal Monitor (RPM) to control the traffic of vehicles in and out of the industrial area. This step is important to ensure that material movements that may be polluted Cesium-137 do not spread," added Rasio.

Previously, Cesium-137's exposure was reported on frozen shrimp products owned by PT BMS which were exported to the United States. It is suspected that the source of the contamination came from activity at PT Peter Metal Technology (PMT) which is located in the same industrial area.

The Ministry of Environment and Environment Control Agency (BPLH) has sealed the company, decontaminated it at a number of points, and prepared temporary storage for Cesium-137 waste. The government is also conducting health monitoring for residents at risk of being affected.

Meanwhile, the Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan ensured that radioactive contamination only occurred in the Cikande Industrial Estate and did not affect the national supply chain or shrimp exports to other countries.
