JAKARTA - The Bureau of Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) insists the hot temperatures felt in some areas of Indonesia are not the result of "heatwaves" or heat waves.

"What happens in the indonesian region is the daily hot temperature conditions that are generally caused by sunny weather conditions during the day and are relatively more significant when the pseudo-position of the sun is around the equatorial," said Deputy Of Meteorology Guswanto quoted Antara, Monday, May 17.

Guswanto explained that according to the WMO (World Meteorological Organization), heatwaves otherwise known as "heatwaves" are a phenomenon of prolonged hot air conditions for five or more days in a row where the daily maximum temperature is higher than the average maximum temperature of up to 5 degrees Celsius or 9 degrees Fanreheit or more.

This heat wave phenomenon usually occurs in mid-high latitudes such as Europe and the Americas.

Atmospheric dynamics can occur due to the presence of hot air trapped in a region due to an anomaly of atmospheric dynamics that result in the flow of air does not move on a wide scale, such as there is a high pressure system on a wide scale and occurs long enough.

While geographically the territory of Indonesia is around the equatorial region, so it has characteristics of atmospheric dynamics that are different from the mid-high latitudes.

"In addition, the indonesian region also has a rapid weather change variability. With the difference in the characteristics of atmospheric dynamics, it can be said that in the territory of Indonesia there is no phenomenon known as heatwave or Heatwave," said Guswanto.

By mid-May, the pseudo-position of the sun was already in the Northern Hemisphere (BBU) at around 19 degrees North Latitude, the condition indicates in the southern Part of Indonesia the equator will be ahead of the east wind period which is identical to the dry season.

Based on bmkg observations, the maximum temperature on May 16, 2021 is recorded between 33-35.2 degrees Celsius with a maximum temperature of 35.2 degrees Celsius occurring in Surabaya.

Maximum temperature conditions with that range are still in normal condition, where changes in daily maximum temperature can still occur in the daily timescale depending on weather conditions or virginity rates in a region.

"Currently most areas of Indonesia will enter the beginning of the dry season where virginity rates will be quite low during the day, so people are encouraged and expected to anticipate hot weather conditions or sweltering conditions during the day by improving endurance and maintaining health, family, and the environment," guswanto said.
