JAKARTA - Chancellor Friedrich Merz stressed Germany's interdependence with the European Union in a 35th anniversary of Germany's reunification, saying that the nation's prosperity is directly related to European success.
"We are only strong together in Europe. Or we are weak as individual countries," Merz said in an important speech he delivered on Friday, October 3.
"In Germany, we know that when Europe performs well, Germany also performs well. And when Europe does not perform well, then Germany performs badly disproportionately," he continued.

He also stressed that Germany must increase its economic competitiveness and deepen Europe's integration to secure its prosperity in the future.
"Our economic power is also starting today with European policies and foreign policy. We must fight a new wave of protectionism in the world," Merz said, stressing that the European Union should redefine its priorities and focus on new markets.
"And Europe must combine climate protection with ambitions to develop the world's most advanced technology for this purpose," he said.
