JAKARTA - North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui said the country's steadfast position was to continue strengthening relations with China, state media reported Tuesday.

During his visit to China, Foreign Minister Choe met with Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang on Monday, KCNA reported, quoted from Reuters on September 30.

PM Li told Foreign Minister Choe, Beijing really appreciates relations with North Korea, reaffirming its position to promote bilateral relations from a strategic and long-term perspective.

Foreign Minister Choe's visit follows North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing earlier this month, the first meeting of the two leaders in six years.

PM Li said Beijing-Pyongyang relations were getting closer under "direct attention and strategic direction" from the two leaders.

North Korea and China are traditional allies, but their relationships are sometimes complicated and tense.

At the United Nations, North Korean Deputy Foreign Minister Kim Son Gyong said his country would never give up on its nuclear program.

China, one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, itself has supported international efforts to curb Pyongyang's nuclear weapons development, but also wants North Korea to play a buffer for US influence in the region, experts say.
