TARAKAN Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman attended the opening of the 2025 Fisherman Farmers' Week (Peda) which was held at the Islamic Center Courtyard.

The Minister of Agriculture directly handed over fertilizer, cocoa seeds, and pandan coconut assistance, as well as having a dialogue with farmers and field agricultural instructors (PPL).

Amran emphasized that the border between North Kalimantan (Kaltara) has great potential to become a center for the production of strategic commodities, especially corn, coconut and cocoa. According to him, the most effective strategy for dealing with smuggling is not only through strict security, but by filling the border area with legal and competitive agricultural production.

"Border areas like Kaltara have great potential. We must take advantage of geographical bonuses adjacent to Malaysia. Strategic commodities such as corn, coconut, and cocoa are needed by neighboring countries. If we plant here, not only strengthen farmers' economy, but also fortify themselves from smuggling practices," said Amran, Monday, September 29.

He gave an example, the smuggling practices that used to be rampant can now be suppressed by planting the same commodities in the country.

"In the past, onions and fruits were often smuggled. But after we planted them at the border, now there are almost no more. That's the best defense," he added.

Amran also conveyed encouraging news that Indonesia in the near future has the potential to announce food self-sufficiency faster than the target.

"If there are no obstacles, in the next three months we can announce self-sufficiency. President Prabowo has conveyed this at the UN forum," he said.

According to the Minister of Agriculture, the central government's support for the agricultural sector is enormous.

In 2026, the Ministry of Agriculture is projected to manage a regular budget of IDR 40 trillion, the highest in history. In addition, an additional budget (ABT) of IDR 9.95 trillion was also prepared for the procurement of seeds on 880 thousand hectares of land with a target of 1.6 million workers.

Not only that, but there is also banking support of IDR 89 trillion and People's Business Credit (KUR) funds of more than IDR 100 trillion that can be accessed by farmers.

Amran advised local governments to immediately prepare proposals so that funds can be distributed immediately.

"I have spoken with the Governor and the regents. I'm just waiting for the readiness of the regional proposal. If the proposal has been submitted, the funds can go down immediately," he said.
