DENPASAR - Bali Penida River Basin Center (BWS) has begun to carry out dredging in the Muara Nusa Dua Reservoir which is the estuary of Tukad Badung as the first step to reduce the risk of flooding in the downstream area.

Head of BWS Bali Penida Gunawan Suntoro said the dredging was carried out considering the flood disaster on September 10, which hit a number of points in Denpasar City, including the Tanah Kilap area, leaving residents worried.

The dredging also followed up on complaints from the people in Pemogan Village, South Denpasar who wanted the normalization of the Tukad Badung estuary and dredging of the reservoir sediment to be carried out regularly.

This effort is considered important to increase the capacity of water storage during high rainfall intensity so as to minimize overflowing water into people's homes.

Gunawan Suntoro said the sedimentation conditions in Muara Nusa Dua Reservoir (muara Tukad Badung) were already quite high.

Therefore, routine dredging is carried out. However, his party faces obstacles in land constraints for sediment disposal.

"Currently, the temporary land available is only about 1,200 m2 with a capacity of 5,000-6,000 m3. For this reason, BWS Bali Penida has also proposed the participation of the village government in preparing additional disposal areas," he said.

In addition to dredging the reservoir, BWS Bali Penida coordinated with the Denpasar City Government to repair the Tukad Badung river channel.

A number of cliff strengthening points that were broken down due to flooding began to be handled, especially those adjacent to residential areas and road access for residents.

Perbekel Pemogan Village I Made Suwirya expressed his appreciation for the quick steps taken by BWS Bali Penida.

"We hope that the normalization of reservoirs and the Tukad Badung river in the downstream will be carried out regularly and continuously, as an effort to anticipate flooding," he said, quoted by ANTARA.

He hopes that with the dredging of the reservoir and repairing the river channel, the risk of flooding in the downstream area is expected to be reduced.
