JAKARTA - The Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries of the Republic of Indonesia (KKP RI), Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, invited students of Muhammadiyah University Jakarta (UMJ) to appear as creators of solutions for Indonesia's sovereignty as well as marine sustainability.

He conveyed this message during the Campus Life Introduction activity for Muhammadiyah University Jakarta Students (PKKMB UMJ) at the KH Auditorium Ahmad Azhar Basyir, the UMJ Cendekia Building, Tuesday, September 23.

Trenggono emphasized that the increase in Indonesia's population automatically made food needs soar. One of the answers that is now the world's concern is blue food or blue food sourced from the marine and fisheries sector. However, he reminded that the use of these resources must always preserve marine ecosystems.

"Indonesia is a maritime country with 17,504 islands and coastlines along 108,000 kilometers. This shows that marine resources have an important role for the survival of the Indonesian people. Therefore, we must be able to balance between economic interests and environmental conservation," said Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, in a statement received, Tuesday, September 23.

He also mentioned the big challenges faced, ranging from pressures on human activities, climate change, overfishing, to marine pollution. To answer that all, the KKP encourages the expansion of marine conservation areas, more measurable fishing management, and sustainable cultivation development.

Furthermore, the KKP is promoting a priority program to support Asta Cita President and Vice President of Indonesia. Some of them are the construction of large data ocean infrastructure as well as the development of the Red and White Fisherman Village modeling. In addition, the KKP has also established five cultivation champion commodities, namely shrimp, tilapia copy, crabs, seaweed, and lobsters.

For Trenggono, students have an important position in supporting the implementation of blue economy policies. Creativity, innovation, and the critical spirit of students are needed so that solutions that favor Indonesia's marine sustainability are born.

"To new students, study hard. The future is so long, and Indonesia's safety, Indonesia's progress, and Indonesia's future is in the hands of students," he said.

With this invitation, UMJ students are expected not only to focus on classrooms but also to dare to produce real ideas and actions to protect the Indonesian sea.
