Mount Marapi West Sumatra Eruption, Spray Volcanic Ash As High As 1,000 Meters

The Gunung Marapi Volcano Post (PGA) reported the eruption of a volcano in Agam Regency and Tanah Datar Regency, West Sumatra today, Sunday, September 21. Sprinkles of volcanic ash as high as 1,000 meters occurred at 13.28 WIB to the southwest.

"The southwest direction is heading to the city of Padang Panjang. But for how far the exposure to volcanic ash is still waiting for reports from the Volcanic Ash Advisory Center Darwin and ASHTAM," said PGA officer Gunung Marapi Teguh Purnomo in Padang, citing ANTARA on Sunday.

From the report summarized PGA, the ash column was observed to be gray in color with thick intensity to the southwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 30.4 millimeters, and lasted about 38 seconds. The volcanic eruption 2.891 meters above sea level (MDPL) was still ongoing when officers made the report.

Currently, Mount Marapi is still on Alert status or Level II. The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) issued a number of recommendations, including prohibiting people, tourists, or visitors from doing activities within a three-kilometer radius from the activity center (Verbeek Luxury).

PVMBG also reminded the threat of cold lava potential, especially for people living along rivers that originate from the top of the volcano.
