Coordinating Minister Yusril: Delpedro Restorative Justice Option Await Investigation

JAKARTA - Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration and Corrections (Menko Kumham Imipas) Yusril Ihza Mahendra said the option of implementing restorative justice against activists Delpedro Marhaen and several other activists detained would wait for investigation.

Because, he said, the restorative justice mechanism could only be applied when investigators believed the case could be transferred to the court with sufficient evidence.

"If it hasn't reached that stage, how do we want to do restorative justice," said Yusril as quoted by ANTARA, Monday, September 8.

Therefore, although restorative justice options are still being considered, he said, law enforcement must still run properly.

"We don't do restorative justice, but this person is actually doing this, whether it's true or not, we also want to do restorative justice. In order to make people understand," he said.

Polda Metro Jaya arrested six suspects suspected of being involved in incitement and dissemination of electronic information that led to anarchist acts and riots in the demonstration, one of which was Delpedro Marhaen.

Delpedro is said to have played a role in inciting and inviting students and children to take part in riots at a number of demonstration locations.

Previously, Human Rights Minister (HAM) Natalius Pigai asked law enforcement officials (APH) to use a restorative justice mechanism if there have been arrests of activists in a series of recent demonstrations.

He said this if the arrested activists did not take actions that were against the law, such as attacks on other individuals and damaging public or individual facilities, but only expressing opinions, thoughts, and feelings.

"Please run the legal process, but we offer restorative justice," Pigai said at a press conference in Jakarta, Tuesday (2/9).

He also emphasized that the government will continue to be with civil society, so that the people are asked not to doubt the government's alignment with the ongoing demonstrations.
