BOGOR - The death toll from the collapse of the Asohibiyah Islamic Study Group (Majelis Taklim Asohibiyah) building in Sukamakmur Village, Ciomas District, Bogor Regency, West Java, on Sunday morning has reached more than 80.
Bogor Regent Rudy Susmanto stated that the Prophet Muhammad's birthday celebration, attended by around 150 women, caused the location to be overcrowded.
Some were inside and outside, while others were on the building's terrace.
"The building's terrace was situated on the edge of a cliff, and due to its overcapacity, it ultimately could not support the weight. As a result, the disaster occurred, and the number of victims has reached more than 80 people," he said on Sunday, September 7.
Rudy expressed his condolences to the victims' families and asked for everyone to be patient in facing the tragedy.
"We offer our deepest condolences, and may the victims' families be given strength," said the regent.
Susmanto emphasized that the number of victims could still increase as the joint team in the field collects data.
"We continue to coordinate with the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) and hospitals to ensure all victim data is confirmed," he said.
Data from the Bogor Regency Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) recorded three deaths, while dozens of others suffered serious, moderate, or minor injuries.
The deceased victims were Irni Susanti, a resident of Sukamakmur, who was treated at Medika Dramaga Hospital, and Ulan and Nurhayati, who were treated at the Bogor Red Cross Hospital.
