JAKARTA - Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian has asked regional governments to immediately repair public facilities damaged by riots in several regions in recent times.

He emphasized that leaving damaged public facilities unattended will only cause trauma for the public.

"Don't let (damaged facilities) be left as they will traumatize the public. So, repairs should be carried out immediately, and if they require a long time, close them," Tito said after the Regional Inflation Control Coordination Meeting at the Ministry of Home Affairs Office in Jakarta on Tuesday, as reported by Antara.

The Home Affairs Minister explained that repairs can be funded through the Regional Budget (APBD). Funding can also come from mutual cooperation (gotong royong), for example, through assistance from well-off communities.

"If the APBD is experiencing difficulties, it can be done through grant mechanisms. For example, grants from the provincial government or from other districts with stronger fiscal budgets," he said.

He added that the central government also did not rule out the possibility of contributing to the repairs. Currently, the government is still coordinating to map which regions can repair themselves and which require assistance, including calculating the total losses nationally.

"We haven't calculated the damage nationally. Not yet. We're in the process," he said.

The Minister of Home Affairs noted that since August 25, 2025, demonstrations have taken place in various regions. Some have been peaceful, but some have caused damage due to anarchic behavior.

In addition to repairing damaged facilities, regional governments are being asked to immediately hold meetings with the Regional Leadership Coordination Forum (Forkopimda) to discuss the current situation in their respective regions.

Regional governments are also expected to open dialogue with community leaders, religious leaders, and academics, and hold activities that foster peace, such as joint prayers involving various communities.

Furthermore, regional governments are being urged to intensify pro-people programs, such as low-cost markets and the distribution of social assistance, which are state obligations. Conversely, ceremonial activities that appear wasteful are being asked to postpone. Officials and their families are also being reminded to refrain from excessive displays of luxury.

The Minister of Home Affairs also emphasized that his office is postponing approval of overseas travel requests for regional heads. He requested that all regional heads whose regions are considered vulnerable remain in their respective regions to control the situation with the Regional Leadership Communication Forum (Forkopimda).
