Affan Kurniawan Dies After Being Run Over by a Brimob Vehicle, Komnas HAM: We Will Prove Human Rights Violations

JAKARTA - The National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) believes there were human rights violations behind the death of Affan Kurniawan, who was run over by a Brimob tactical vehicle belonging to the Jakarta Metropolitan Police (Polda Metro Jaya).

Komnas HAM is known to have been included as an external supervisor in the National Police's case review process regarding the case.

"There were definitely human rights violations," Komnas HAM Monitoring and Investigation Commissioner Saurlin P. Siagian told reporters on Tuesday, September 2.

However, he did not clearly explain the nature of the human rights violations, including whether they were categorized as serious or otherwise.

Saurlin only emphasized that the human rights violations would be disclosed and proven in due course. This would ensure a sense of justice for all parties.

"We will later prove the nature of the human rights violations," he said.

Furthermore, he stated that the case review process concluded that there was an alleged criminal offense. Therefore, the handling of the case has been handed over to the National Police's Criminal Investigation Agency (Bareskrim Polri).

"Earlier, it was concluded that there were allegations of criminal acts and ethical violations, and the case will be referred to the National Police Criminal Investigation Agency (Bareskrim Polri)," said Saurlin.

Meanwhile, online motorcycle taxi (ojol) driver Affan Kurniawan was killed after being run over by a tactical vehicle in the Bendungan Hilir area on August 28, 2025.

Seven Brimob officers are being sought in connection with the case: Police Commissioner Kosmas, Police Brigadier Rohmat, Police Inspector M. Rohyani, Police Brigadier Danang, Police Brigadier Mardin, Baraka Jana Edi, and Baraka Yohanes David.

Of the seven, two—Police Commissioner Kosmas and Police Brigadier Rohmat—are facing dismissal. Their actions are categorized as serious violations.

In the series of collisions, Police Commissioner Kosmas was in the front passenger seat, next to the driver. Police Brigadier Rohmat was driving the tactical vehicle.

Meanwhile, the other five Brimob officers were charged with moderate violations. They are Aipda M. Rohyani, Briptu Danang, Briptu Mardin, Baraka Jana Edi, and Baraka Yohanes David.
