Police: Eye Gas Shots At Unisba Triggered By Molotov Bomb Attack

Head of Public Relations of the West Java Police, Kombes Hendra Rochmawan, said the incident began when a large-scale joint patrol of the TNI/Polri passed through the Tamansari Street area, Bandung City.

"At the same time, a group of people dressed in black appeared who were suspected of being a group of drugs. They were the ones who initially closed the road and made a blockade in Tamansari while being anarchist," said Hendra in Bandung, Antara, Tuesday, September 2.

Hendra explained that the group then carried out further provocations by throwing Molotov cocktails from inside the campus at officers and vehicles, including the Brimob tactical vehicle. Due to this condition, officers fired tear gas into the highway.

"The team then fired tear gas into the highway, but inflated by the wind into the Unisba parking lot. This was then used as material for provocation by the anarchist group to clash students with officers," he said.

He emphasized that information on social media that said the authorities entered campus, carried rubber bullet weapons, and fired tear gas into the campus area was not true.

"The officers' distance with the campus is approximately 200 meters from the Unisba campus. There were also no tear gas shots directed to the campus, all of which were directed to the highway, where black-clad groups gathered," he said.

Hendra added that after the situation was under control on Tamansari Street and the black-clad group fled, the joint TNI/Polri patrols resumed security to a number of other points in Bandung City.

"Tuduhan bahwa aparat menyerang lebih dahulu adalah tidak benar. Justru kami melakukan patroli dialogis untuk menjaga keamanan dan ketertiban di wilayah Jawa Barat," katanya.
