Ternate Pala Prepared To Become A Geographical Indication Product That Is Protected By The State

TERNATE - Regional Office (Kanwil) of the Ministry of Law (Kemenkum) of North Maluku together with the Department of Agriculture of Ternate City and the Geographical Indication Protection Society (MPIG) conducted a field review of the management of Ternate Pala as a protected geographical indication.

"The North Maluku Ministry of Law and Human Rights Regional Office synergizes with the Agriculture and MPIG Offices to encourage Ternate Pala to be a geographical indication. That way the market value will increase and provide opportunities for improving welfare for farmers and nutmeg traders in Ternate," said the Head of the North Maluku Ministry of Law and Human Rights, Budi Argap Situngkir in Ternate, as reported by ANTARA, Saturday, August 30.

According to him, before the substantive examination, the geographical indication (IG) will be assessed by the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI) next week.

He said that the Ternate Pala is targeted to be a geographical indication that its existence is protected by the state, and can provide economic benefits for the community, especially spice farmers.

Geographical indications, continued Argap Situngkir, are a sign that shows the origin of a product from a certain geographic area, where environmental factors both nature and humans provide a reputation, quality, and distinctive characterization of the product.

"The main advantage is to provide legal protection for producers, guarantee the authenticity and quality of consumers, and increase economic value and competitiveness of local products," added Argap Situngkir.

For information, the encouragement of Ternate Pala to be a geographical indication because in North Maluku the relatively small number is only two, namely Pala Dukono from North Halmahera, and Cengkeh Moloku Kieraha from Ternate. Meanwhile, the potential for IG is abundant in districts/cities in North Maluku.

"The Ministry of Law and Human Rights of North Maluku continues to encourage synergy from local governments, MPIG, and all parties in supporting the registration of IG potential to be geographical indications," concluded Argap Situngkir.
