House of Representatives Commission III Urges National Police Chief to Take Firm Action Against His Subordinates After Killing an Online Motorcycle Taxi Driver Using a Mobile Brigade Vehicle

JAKARTA – Abdullah, a member of Commission III of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), condemned the violence committed by police officers in connection with the death of Affan Kurniawan (20), an online motorcycle taxi (Ojol) driver who died after being hit and run over by a Brimob (Mobile Brigade) vehicle while dispersing a demonstration in the Pejompongan area, Central Jakarta.

Abdullah urged National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo to take firm action against his subordinates who were the perpetrators of the collision. He emphasized that the incident must not be allowed to go unaccounted for.

"The police officer who hit and ran over the deceased Affan must be held accountable. Law enforcement must be transparent so that the victim's family receives justice," Abdullah emphasized to reporters on Friday, August 29.

The National Awakening Party (PKB) politician also reminded the police to prioritize a humane approach in securing demonstrations. He argued that repressive actions would only worsen the situation and harm public trust.

"The police must secure demonstrations humanely and not use violence against demonstrators. Every citizen has the right to express their opinion," he said.

Meanwhile, Abdullah appealed to the people taking to the streets to express their aspirations in an orderly and peaceful manner. He asked protesters not to engage in anarchic acts or damage public facilities.

"Demonstrations are a constitutional right, but they must be carried out responsibly. They must not harm the wider community," said the legislator from the Central Java VI electoral district.

Abdullah also expressed his deep condolences for the death of Affan Kurniawan. He hoped that justice would be served for the family and that they would be granted patience.

"We express our deepest condolences for the passing of Affan Kurniawan, our friend. May the bereaved family be granted patience," Abdullah said.

As reported, online motorcycle taxi driver Affan Kurniawan died after being hit and run over by a Brimob (Indonesian National Police) armored vehicle in the Pejompongan area, Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta, on the evening of Thursday, August 28th.

Affan Kurniawan was rushed to Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM) after being run over by a Brimob vehicle. However, his life could not be saved. The motorcycle taxi drivers protested and besieged the Kwitang Brimob headquarters.
