North Sumatra Police Arrest 39 Demonstrators Allegedly Provocateurs In DPRD

The North Sumatra Regional Police have arrested 39 people who held a demonstration in front of the North Sumatra DPRD Building on Jalan Imam Bonjol Medan to maintain security stability.

"The security measure is a form of the responsibility of the National Police in maintaining security stability," said Head of Public Relations of the North Sumatra Police, Police Commissioner Ferry Walintukan, quoted by ANTARA, Wednesday, August 27.

Ferry continued from dozens of people who were arrested, consisting of 15 students and 24 non-students during the action who are currently in the interrogation process.

He suspects that the 39 people were provocateurs and perpetrators of anarchy during the demonstration in front of the North Sumatra DPRD Building, Tuesday (26/8).

"We respect the right to express opinions in public, but if the action is carried out in an anarchic way that damages the facilities and injures the officers, then the authorities must act," he said.

The North Sumatra Regional Police appreciates most of the participants in the demonstration who remain orderly and cooperative. According to him, freedom of expression should not be misused, causing disturbances to public security and order.

The National Police always prioritizes a persuasive and humanist approach. However, the safety of the community, including the participants of the action itself, remains a top priority," he said.

He said the situation around the North Sumatra DPRD Building was conducive. Joint officers from the North Sumatra Regional Police and the Medan City Resort Police are still on standby to ensure security and prevent riots from recurring.

With this firm and measurable action, the Head of Public Relations hopes that the public will continue to channel their aspirations in a peaceful, orderly manner, and in accordance with the provisions of the law so that freedom of expression can go hand in hand with security and public order.
