JAKARTA - US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin met with delegations for more than an hour each. The Kremlin says the meeting is now over.

This is important because earlier this week, Trump said he would know in a few minutes whether Putin was really interested in achieving peace.

Trump once said if the summit went badly, he "will back down."

"I'm probably going to go and say, 'hopefully it will work,' and that will be the end. I might say this will not be resolved," Trump said before the summit in Alaska on Friday, August 15 local time.

Trump previously welcomed the Russian leader on the red carpet on the runway of the US Air Force base. The two shook hands warmly and touched each other's arms before boarding Trump's limousine to the summit near him.

There, the two presidents sat with their respective delegates in their first meeting since 2019. The blue background behind them reads "Pursuing Peace" (Following Peace).

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was not invited to the negotiations and his European allies fear Trump may betray Ukraine by freezing the conflict with Russia and admitting "although only informally" Russia's control over a fifth of Ukraine's territory.

Trump had tried to defuse those concerns as he boarded Air Force One, saying he would let Ukraine decide the possibility of a regional exchange.

"I'm not here to negotiate for Ukraine, I'm here to bring them together," he said.
