JAKARTA - South Korean President (South Korea) Lee Jae Myung hopes for inter-Korean negotiations after Pyongyang began dismantling propaganda loudspeakers.

"We recently dismantled our loudspeakers along the border and I understand that North Korea has also removed some of its loudspeakers, although I'm not sure if it's finished," Lee said at a cabinet meeting reported by ANTARA from Anadolu, Tuesday, August 12.

According to Lee, such reciprocal action will gradually lead to dialogue and communication between the two sides, and hopes to open the door to dialogue with North Korea, Yonhap News reports.

His latest statement came after North Korea on Saturday began dismantling propaganda loudspeakers, a sign of tension between the two Koreas, began to subside.

Lee, who took office in June, ordered the suspension of loudspeaker broadcasts along the dividing line overlooking North Korea, and also stopped sending anti-Pyongyang leaflets, as part of his efforts to restore trust and inter-Korean dialogue.

As a reply, Pyongyang also stopped broadcasting and is now dismantling its infrastructure.

South Korea accommodates more than 28,500 United States (US) troops under a bilateral defense agreement, as the inter-Korean war in the 1950s ended with an official ceasefire agreement, not a temporary ceasefire, so that technically the two Koreas remain at war.
