JAKARTA - British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is "deeply concerned" by the repeated attacks targeting journalists in Gaza. Most recently, five journalists were killed in an Israeli airstrike.
The Israeli military said it targeted and killed Al Jazeera journalist Anas Al Sharif, accusing him of leading a Hamas militant cell and of involvement in rocket attacks on Israel.
Al Jazeera, which is funded by the Qatari government, has dismissed Israel's accusations. Before his death, Al Sharif also denied any involvement in terrorism.
"We are deeply concerned by the repeated targeting of journalists in Gaza," a spokesman for British Prime Minister Starmer told reporters, as reported by Reuters on Monday, August 11.
"Reporters covering conflict are afforded protection under international humanitarian law, and journalists must be able to report independently, without fear, and Israel must ensure journalists can carry out their work safely," the statement continued.
Responding to claims by one of the journalists of links to Hamas, Starmer's spokesman said: "This must be thoroughly and independently investigated, but we are deeply concerned by the repeated targeting of journalists."
