JAKARTA - US President Donald Trump will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin to negotiate the end of the war in Ukraine on Friday, August 15 in Alaska.

Trump made the announcement on social media after saying both sides, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, were close to reaching a ceasefire agreement that could resolve the three-and-a-half-year conflict, which could require Ukraine to give up most of its territory.

Speaking to reporters at the White House on Friday, August 8, Trump hinted the deal would involve a regional exchange.

"There will be a regional exchange for the good of both," the Republican president said.

In his evening address to the people, Zelenskyy said a ceasefire could be reached as long as adequate pressure was imposed on Russia.

The Ukrainian president said he had had more than a dozen conversations with leaders of various countries and his team continued to communicate with the United States.

While Putin claims four Ukrainian regions Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhia, and Kherson as well as the Crimean Black Sea peninsula, which he annexed in 2014. His troops did not fully control the entire region in the four regions.

Earlier, Bloomberg News reported US and Russian officials were working on a deal that would lock Moscow's occupation of territory captured during its military invasion.

A White House official said Bloomberg news was simply speculation. A Kremlin spokesman did not respond to a request for comment.

Ukraine has previously signaled a willingness to be flexible in efforts to end the war that has devastated its cities and killed many of its soldiers and citizens.

However, accepting the loss of about a fifth of Ukraine's territory would be painful and politically challenging for Zelenskiy and his government.

Tyson Barker, a former special representative of the US State Department for Ukraine's economic recovery, said the peace proposal as outlined in the Bloomberg report would soon be rejected by Ukraine.

"The best Ukraine can do is stick to their objections and requirements for a negotiated settlement while showing their gratitude for American support," said Barker, a senior researcher at the Atlantic Council.

Based on the proposed deal, according to Bloomberg, Russia will stop its attacks on the Kherson and Zaporizhia regions along the current line of fighting.
