Central Tapanuli Rocked By A 5.3 M Earthquake, BMKG Urges Residents To Check Buildings

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) stated that the activity of rock deformation in Indo-Australian plates subducted under Eurasian plates or popularly known as earthquakes in plates triggered a 5.3 magnitude earthquake in Central Tapanuli, North Sumatra.

"Intra-slab earthquake or the earthquake in this plate has a sliding downward movement," said BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center Director Daryono, quoted by ANTARA, Friday, August 8.

He explained that the earthquake was detected at sea with a depth of 84 kilometers at a distance of 50 kilometers from the southwest of Sumatra's west coast in Tapanuli Tegah, North Sumatra.

The tremors were felt to shake up a number of areas for a while with an intensity scale of II- IV MMI; starting from Doloksanggul, Pandan, Sibolga and Sarudik, Sidikalang and Gunung Sitoli and the South Nias - North Nias area, North Sumatra.

BMKG ensured that based on seismological analysis, it was confirmed that the earthquake did not have the potential for a tsunami.

Until now, there have been no reports of damage caused by the intermediate-power earthquake, and the BMKG has also not detected any aftershocks until at least 23:00 WIB.

The BMKG appealed to the public to inspect and re-assURE the residential building where there was no damage due to earthquake vibrations before entering it again.

In addition, vigilance must also be increased while still following the guidelines from the local government, and not be influenced by issues that cannot be justified until the results of the analysis of comprehensive events are reported by the BMKG.
