Coir Net Karya, A Resident Of Ciamis Prison, Successfully Entered Japanese And Korean Markets

JABAR - The Ciamis Class IIB Correctional Institution (Lapas) recorded a historic moment through the initial export of Coir Net (branch coconut net - red) to South Korea and Japan.

This initial export is part of an independent coaching program that focuses on empowering the inmates through economic-valued job skills training. "This export is a symbol of the success of the prison independence development program," said Head of Ciamis Headquarters, Supriyanto to reporters, Sunday, August 3.

Supriyanto said that Coir Net is a net made from braided and manually damped coconut sabut. This product is environmentally friendly, strong, and has high durability to the weather and the process of decay.

"In the process of making and shipping 5,400 packs of coconut sabut nets to the overseas market," said Supriyanto, Ciamis Prison in collaboration with industrial partner, PT Coir Global Indonesia. Inmates are equipped with technical training in spinning and knitting sabut threads into ready-to-export nets," he said.

Coir Net has various benefits, such as environmental conservation, agriculture and reforestation, environmentally friendly construction, and creative industry. "This export program opens up opportunities for sustainable export collaboration to strengthen the positive image of correctionalism," added Supriyanto.

Coir Net's first export also had a positive impact on the inmates, namely absorbing as many as 32 inmates in working on coir net products and producing premium wages for inmates of Rp. 5,000,/pcs.

Head of the Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections, Kusnali, added that this application proves that imprisonment can be an alternative economic growth center, especially for the green and labor-intensive industrial sector.

"This export can be a national role model. Not only for the rehabilitation of inmates, but also for moving the local economy and opening up a natural resource-based export market," he said.

"In the future, Ciamis Prison hopes to establish a wider collaboration with industry players and open up more export opportunities," he added.
