JAKARTA - Former United States Vice President of the Democratic Party Kamala Harris said on Wednesday he would not run for the 2026 California governor election, ending speculation saying he would take part in the contest.

"I have seriously considered asking the Californian people for the privilege to serve as their governor. I love this state, its people, and its promises. This is my home. But after deep thinking, I decided that I would not run for governor in this election," he said in a statement. a statement, reported Reuters July 31.

Harris said he would not run for office at this time, opening up opportunities for a possible presidential candidacy by 2028.

"For now, my leadership and public services will not be in an elected position. I look forward to being able to speak up again and listen to the American people, helping to elect Democrats across the country who will fight without fear, and sharing more details in the coming months about my own plans," he said.

Harris has relatively not attracted much attention since losing the Presidential Election to Donald Trump of the Republican Party in 2024.

Meanwhile, California Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat who has been in office since 2019, was unable to run again due to terms of office.

Other well-known Democratic cadres have announced their candidacy, including Xavier Becerra, who serves as director of health and humanitarian services under former President Joe Biden and former US House of Representatives Katie Porter.
